Overview: I’ve seen the most Arnold Schwarzenegger movies including most of his action films and least featuring Edward Furlong (seems like a lot of movies he’s been in that I’ve never heard about).

Interesting seeing that Linda Hamilton has continued to act in some movies. I had this impression that she hadn’t been in any movies since the late 90s and that James Cameron helped coax her back into the business with Dark Fate.

Terminator: Dark Fate hits the US theaters in 5 days … Halloween 2019!

6 Days to Terminator: Dark Fate – Terminator 2: Judgment Day Behind The Scenes Interviews, Reviews

Terminator 2: Judgment Day various movie box art

At the time Terminator 2: Judgment Day was being made, it was an unknown expensive movie. Abyss had not been the hit hoped for and now James Cameron was involved in the most expensive movie ever at that time: T2.

This interview with Robert Patrick is fascinating because it talks about some of the unknowns at the time. It wasn’t believed that T2 would be a major hit out of the gate.

Good answer, Robert! Check out how Robert worked with the T2 CGI crew at ILM:

Making of T2, the T-1000 special effects

Robert Patrick’s expressions, mannerisms, that creepy super fast sprint sold me on the T-1000. And then you add in the cool metal alloy effects? Wow.

Reddit does a Q&A with the panel that revs up the excitement for the movie:

Reddit July 2019 Q&A with the Terminator: Dark Fate Cast
  • Arnold is asked, “Will this movie be as terrible as the last one?” — his answer is great!
  • You can really sense the love this cast has for each other. I’m hopeful this generates some serious on-screen chemistry
  • Arnold said that in the original Terminator, at one point in casting OJ Simpson was considered to be the Terminator!

9 Days to Terminator: Dark Fate – Secret Premiere Surprises and Delights Fans

Ohhhh, wish I was there! Someday somebody will invite me to an advance screening

Clever bait and switch marketing! Alamo Drafthouse organized a special screening of Terminator 2: Judgment Day which was actually Terminator: Dark Fate! (PREVIEW) Early reviewers are responding positively, too! I read them all in the article and there are no spoilers, so it’s safe to follow the article link.

Reactions to the latest film in the franchise, which sees original creator James Cameron return as producer and co-writer, have been overwhelmingly positive with many saying it’s the best film in the franchise since 1991’s critically acclaimed T2.

Fans surprised after ‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day’ screenings turn out to be secret premiere of ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’

Naysayers are out saying that the early reviews are almost always “overwhelmingly positive” so perhaps there should be some hesitancy. I’m hoping it’s exactly what they are saying, however. That it is a true T3 sequel I’ve kept trying to see ever since T2.

T3: Rise of the Machines. Maybe I’ll try and rewatch this movie at some point in the next 9 days and see what went wrong. My memory of the film is that the new Terminator was just too badass. Her arms could turn into laser like weapons which violated the rules of the T-1000. Sure, there could be upgrades – it is future tech, after all — but it felt like too extreme an upgrade. I just remember being put off somewhat by that.

T3: Rise of the Machines trailer

Also, I missed Linda Hamilton. The absence of her in that film seemed to be somewhat of a gaping hole. She was initially interested, but it seemed that without a good script and character arc for her character, Sarah Connor and James Cameron in the film, she, too, was out:

Hamilton later explained her decision not to reprise her role: “They offered me a part. I read it and I knew my character arc was so complete in the first two, and in the third one it was a negligible character. She died halfway through and there was no time to mourn her. It was kind of disposable, so I said no thank you.” When Mostow signed on as director, one of his conditions was that Hamilton reprise her role. However, he realized that the character would not have changed much since the previous film and that she would not contribute much to the story, saying later, “Linda Hamilton is too important to the franchise to stick her in as the third wheel.” Mostow realized that John Connor would need to be the focus of the story,

And there is where the wheels came off for future sequels. John Connor’s story was not as compelling as Sarah Connor. Interestingly enough, Dark Fate is promising to correct this mistake. Will it? We’ll find out in 9 days.

Nick Stahl as John Connor just didn’t work either. Why couldn’t they get Edward Furlong back? I guess they tried, according to Wikipedia:

Edward Furlong signed on in August 2000, to reprise his role as John Connor from the previous film. However, in December 2001, casting began for a new actor to replace Furlong, who was dropped from the project because of a substance abuse problem. Furlong was removed by Warner Bros., which was concerned that his publicized drug problems could jeopardize the project. Furlong later stated “I don’t know [what happened]. It just wasn’t the time. I was going through my own thing at the point in my life – whatever, it just wasn’t meant to be”.

These are my memories about the film combined with the magic of Wikipedia filling in history. Where can T3: Rise of The Machines be watched? I used to own it on DVD, but it got sold when reducing our collection. JustWatch.com reports:

JustWatch.com report says Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines current availability

Kind of surprised that none of the premium channels have Rise of the Machines. You’d think they would have jumped on the timing for Dark Fate as an opportunity to have this movie as a subscriber magnet. Missed opportunity, because I would rather have signed up for a month of a premium channel than pay to rent or by this movie I’ve already seen. Alas, I may skip watching.

I already own the original Terminator and T2: Judgment Day and will definitely be rewatching those, rating and writing reviews before seeing the new movie.

Here’s just some of what is coming to this blog in the next 8 days further embracing fan excitement leading up to the new movie:

  • Rating and reviews of Terminator and T2: Judgment Day (yeah, can’t believe we haven’t done these yet)
  • Historical videos, behind the scenes, interviews and more for T2: Judgment Day
  • Joel and I revisit Terminator: Dark Fate for a final follow-up discussion to our previous vlog.
  • Anticipation ratings for upcoming theater releases, including Dark Fate

Every day until Dark Fate releases, at least one new Terminator-related post will be here. Thank you for reading!

Terminator 1984 Behind the Scenes Interviews, Reviews and More – 10 Days to Terminator: Dark Fate

James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger discuss the making of Terminator (1984)

The countdown to Terminator: Dark Fate has started! 10 days until Halloween and 10 days until this movie opens in theaters. Soon, we’ll know whether or not James Cameron’s influence made a difference in what could have been.

One thing I watched recently that has me even more excited was an interview back in 2017 when Dark Fate was being discussed by James Cameron and Tim Miller the director. They both have a good vision for this movie. Whether or not they can execute, I could tell from that discussion that they are passionate about doing this right. Here is that video:

Tim Miller, director and James Cameron producer for Terminator: Dark Fate (9/2017)

I have been watching classic interviews of prior Terminator films. At the very top of this post, director James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger discuss the original Terminator 1984 making of the movie process.

Michael Biehn who played Kyle Reese remembers the making of Terminator (1984)

Kyle Reese played by Michael Biehn was an integral part of the original Terminator movie. He goes back through his memory of working on the film:

  • James Cameron was flexible with dialogue
  • One of the most difficult stunts he has ever seen is the opening shot where the stunt guy was 6-7 feet laying sideways and jumped sidewise and landed on the cement nude.

Siskel & Ebert reviewing The Terminator. Have to watch to see which one didn’t like it. His review commentary suggests he didn’t seem to know the movie very well, which I found to be humorous.

I’m out there looking at other Terminator-related vidoes, getting excited for Dark Fate.

Australian Man Builds Only Fully Articulated Metal T-800

It took 4 years for Jamie Staff from Jaz Creations to build the T-800

Ok, if this isn’t the most badass DIY project, I don’t know what is. It’s a fully articulated, fully metal version of the Terminator T-800. Man, this is cool!

It took 4 years for for Jamie Staff from Jaz Creations to build. Thanks to Popular Mechanics for the story:

…check out the video to see exactly how Staff pulled off the incredible build, and get started. (Spoiler: It required over 500 pieces of metal and presumably as many buckets of sweat.)

In other Terminator-related news, there is a Terminator: Dark FatePREVIEW IOS/Android MMO game in development that should be released by Firefly Games at the same time as the movie. The game sounds similar to Game of Thrones Winter Is Coming, in that it is one of those build, form alliance with other players and conquer only using the T3 movie as a backdrop. Could be fun to play as there aren’t as many sci-fi MMOs. Most seem to favor the medieval time period.

PREVIEW – Terminator: Dark Fate

Terminator: Dark Fate hits theaters November 1, 2019

What we do and don’t know so far about Terminator: Dark Fate is being piecemeal teased out through various sources:

  • James Cameron returned to produce and made screenplay edits. He did not write the screenplay or direct, however, and did not even show up during any of the shooting.
  • Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton are returning to their iconic roles, but might not be main cast (??? I sure hope both get at least decent amounts of screen time. Will not be excited about extended cameo roles if that’s what we see, but the trailers make it look like they will have decent screen time)
  • Will take place in timeline after T2: Judgment Day, Cameron’s last film in the series. None of the other sequels, reboots, TV, etc will be canon.
  • John Connor does not seem to be a central character in the plot, but Edward Furlong will also return.
  • Kyle Reese? Unknown.
  • Will be Rated R — yay!
  • Guns N’ Roses rumored to be adding possibly brand new music — or existing — to the film. “You Could Be Mine” was catchy part of T2: Judgment Day. This, if it turns out to be true, is awesome.
  • Directed by Deadpool’s Tim Miller. (I am so hoping Dark Fate does not choose the sardonic wit character path of Deadpool). Cameron assured his ex-wife Linda Hamilton that it is in “capable hands.” We’ll soon find out.

Saw the most detailed trailer preview during IT: Chapter Two on Friday. You can watch two trailers on the Rotten Tomatoes Dark Fate page which also provides a juicy movie teaser. Or, if you’re going to see the IT sequel, you’ll see it then. It was my favorite trailer so far because I got the best sense of what the film might be like. Does it spoil the film? No. Here is the Rotten Tomatoes movie info verbatim:

“When Skynet sends a powerful new Terminator from the future in order to terminate Dani Ramos, a hybrid cyborg human and her friends, Sarah Connor teams up with the original T-800 Terminator to fight the new threat and save the future once and for all. “

This has all teased me to the point of wanting to watch Dark Fate. The last few Terminator movies I’ve not been this excited about seeing, so mission accomplished. Simply having Arnold return was not enough to do anything because he just looks old and tired (he is, of course), but this pre-movie buzz feels different.

So, I’m looking forward to seeing this in the theater along with Rambo Last Blood later this month and soon Doctor Sleep, the sequel to The Shining.

I’m curious how many others are looking forward to see Dark Fate or other new movies coming to theaters this fall?
