Opening 4-30-2021 in Theaters: Separation, Walking With Herb, Limbo [all LIMITED]

Friday, week #18 of 2021 (4/30 – 5/2/2021).

A string of LIMITED releases this week, so some/all may or may not be available for viewing in theaters in your area. Regal Cinemas are open again in our area, so that has expanded the overall number of theaters. We decided to stay with AMC Stubs A-List vs. going back to the Regal Unlimited plan, at least for another month or so. There are more Regal cinemas in our area than AMC, but there are pros and cons for each monthly movie pass service.

Regal kind of nickels and dimes their members with fees for IMAX, convenience fees and the like but does offer an unlimited amount of movies watched as long as the same movie isn’t watched more than once per day. AMC limits to three movies in any format every week and no convenience fees for reserving online or using their app.

Let’s get to this weekend’s new movies available in theaters…

Separation
[LIMITED]

Creatures that walk with dislocated bones, ewww. Yeah, I get the feeling this creature feature might be in my wheelhouse, unless it spends more time on keeping the creature in the dark vs. letting it out and doing something with it besides making only making it scary.

We’ve all seen those type of horror films: where they think it’s scary knowing nothing about the monster or obsessing over its origins.

The trailer makes me think (hope!) that this will be one of those horror films that’s in the middle, that doesn’t rely too much on cheap jump scares. Will find out soon enough!

Anybody else interested in seeing this one in theaters? Or plan to wait and see it on streaming?

Anticipation: 5/10

Walking With Herb

An amateur golfer that is struggling with his faith. I have enjoyed watching some of these type films, so maybe will enjoy this one. Admittedly not among my top genres for films to watch, but also like seeing something different and uncommon. The problems is a lot of these stories, despite the genre, are formulaic and a little too neatly put together. I sort of prefer a more real life roughness to the stories versus working non-organically toward the happy ending. Some happy endings are OK, but in general that seems too often to be an artificial goal. We don’t always need the HE to be entertained and if we’re looking for faith on real life situations, we should have real life uncertainty — sometimes, anyway.

Then again maybe Herb won’t have a completely happy ending?

Limbo A

Another one of those the title a lot about what the movie is about.

Omar is a promising young musician. Separated from his Syrian family, he is stuck on a remote Scottish island awaiting the fate of his asylum request.

Via IMDB

Lukewarm interest on this one based on trailer and description, but as stated before on several other movies we don’t know much about, this could be a pleasant surprise.

Opening 4-23-2021 in Theaters: Mortal Kombat, Together, Together, Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train

Thursday, week #17 of 2021 (4/22 – 4/25/2021).

Three movies available this weekend, including the much awaited Mortal Kombat in theaters and streaming on HBO Max.

Mortal Kombat
[FIRST LOOK]

For those with HBO Max you can watch the first few minutes of this already. I passed, as we already have reserved tickets for the first showing on Friday.

Anticipation: 7/10

Together, Together

This surrogate for a single dad story is only showing at one AMC theater nearby, so we might not get to see this one in the theater, but it’s opening this weekend as well. Think Kara might enjoy this premise anyway. I’m not that excited by the trailer above.

Anticipation: 2/10

Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train
[FIRST LOOK]

This anime film, I believe, is the highest grossing film in Japan of all time. This is putting me in an Akira frame of mind. Have been wanting to see this for months now. Kara has zero interest, so I’ll be seeing this one solo. Can’t wait! Yes, I”m actually looking more forward to seeing this than Mortal Kombat (and I’m really looking forward to that)

Dubbed and subbed, here we come!

Opening 4-16-2021 in Theaters: In The Earth

Thursday, week #16 of 2021 (4/16 – 4/18/2021).

As we work our way toward Mortal Kombat next weekend, we’re down to one new movie in theaters times again. This week a movie we haven’t seen much marketing for to date. Timely horror as it deals with a world ravaged by a pandemic.

In The Earth

Must admit some reluctance to see a movie about a pandemic in the middle of a pandemic. It’s like watching an airplane disaster movie while inflight. Then again, beggars can’t be choosers in these once again lean new release in theaters movie times.

That all aside, the trailer looks, well, watch it and judge yourselves. I like the inverted A in the title graphic.

Opening 4-9-2021 in Theaters: Voyagers

Thursday, week #15 of 2021 (4/9 – 4/11/2021).

Talk about provocative box art. Not sure what to think from the trailer for this sci-fi film, but I like a good dose of sci-fi now and again. The last sci-fi film we saw in theaters was Chaos Walking, and I liked that one.

Voyagers

A science fiction film starring Tye Sheridan from Ready Player One. Sheridan was good the last time I saw him and haven’t seen him in much else, so good too see him again in this film.

Opening 3-31-2021 in Theaters: Godzilla vs. Kong

Theaters/HBO Max: 3/31/2021

Thursday, week #14 of 2021 (3/31 – 4/4/2021).

This week my most anticipated movie so far of 2021 is coming. It’s already making the rounds on theater screens internationally and doing our best to avoid early spoiler-laden reviews. We’ll have our norml non-spoiler review coverage after seeing on the big screen soon. No, we’re not planning on seeing this on HBO Max.

Am not sure how well the HBO Max deal is working, but for us, it’s pretty much a non-event. We’ve seen two of their releases so far on HBO Max. The first was because there were no theaters open and the second because we had limited interest in seeing it in theaters. We are AMC Stubs A-list members and our preference is to watch new movies in theaters first.

Godzilla vs. Kong

I enjoyed watching all the Godzilla vs. movies when I was younger. Godzilla seemed so big. I’ve started rewatching some of the classic Godzilla movies on HBO Max and a lot of it seems cheesier to me now then all those years ago. Given these movies were made a long time ago and special effects and budgets were tiny compared to what Warner Bros. has available in 2021.

Opening 3-25-2021 in Theaters: Nobody

Theaters: 3/25/2021

Thursday, week #13 of 2021 (3/25 – 3/28/2021).

Another movie coming out that has been showing frequently in previews is this week’s wide screening. Love the title.

Nobody

This one has a quiet sort of vicious action charm to it. It seems from the trailer like a man is trying to move on from his former business which was very dangerous and violent. Apparently being a “nobody” isn’t going to be that easy when his new identity is discovered by various bad guys.

This is the kind of role we might have seen a younger Arnold Schwarzenegger in. Kind of a touch of True Lies meets Eraser, but this comparison based of the trailer below might be way off.

Opening 3-18-2021 in Theaters: The Courier

Theaters: 3/18/2021

Thursday, week #12 of 2021 (3/18 – 3/21/2021).

Been seeing a lot of previews for this week’s wide release movie, but the biggest release this week is happening on streaming with the long awaited Snyder Cut of Justice League. I’d heard rumors this might be making some kind of limited theatrical run, but don’t see it playing at any of the theaters open in our area. Maybe it will appear on Friday somewhere. We’re going to be beach bound for a couple days, but will sneak in movies when/where we can, if not when we return this weekend.

The Courier

This espionage thriller has an intriguing trailer, see below.

This could be one we really enjoy — or not. I have enjoyed many stories based on true stories. A businessman turning into a spy isn’t as interesting as some other occupations perhaps, but guess it all depends on what type of businessman he turns out to be.

Opening 3-11-2021 in Theaters: The Father, Long Weekend

Theaters: 3/11/2021

Thursday, week #11 of 2021 (3/11 – 3/14/2021): two new movies this week, a drama and a romantic comedy. Am running a bit behind checking out the movie entertainment scene as work — you know, that day job — has been keeping me very busy lately.

It’s good to see new movies continuing to be released in theaters. We still haven’t seen one of the three from last week, but tonight we’re springing for tickets for one of the new ones (we’re still deciding which as this is being written, but leaning toward The Father). By the time this is posted (12:01am Friday 3/12) we’ll have already made our choice.

The Father

Anthony Hopkins is the standout reason to see this film here. He’s a great actor. Does this script about an elderly father facing the ravages of time.

Anticipation: 5/10

Long Weekend

Not much is sticking out in this trailer. Sort of the standard fare rom-com trailer.

Anticipation: 4/10

Opening 3-5-2021 in Theaters: Raya and the Last Dragon, Boogie, Chaos Walking

Theaters: 3/5/2021
+ Disney+ premium ($30)

Wednesday, week #10 of 2021 (3/5 – 3/7/2021): three movies.

Say that again with some emphasis: three movies!

That’s how many are opening in theaters this weekend. What has largely been a case of one here, one there, we’re finally getting more several movies screening.

Given one of them is also showing on Disney+ as part of their Disney+ Premium experience (see: ), but this probably won’t that much impact on theaters. We saw this last weekend with Tom & Jerry. People will go to the theaters even if they can still watch it at home. Have always thought that the whole day and date ruins box office receipts is overstated. You can’t get the theater experience (easily) at home. Yes, it can be done, if you have your own home theater room, but watching movies on your TV screen — even a large one — isn’t the same as watching in theaters.

Raya and the Last Dragon
FIRST LOOK

We won’t be paying the premium $30 fee to watch this on Disney+, no more than we did for Mulan.

Anticipation: 4/10

Boogie

This has been getting a lot of preview love in theaters. Basketball sports story of a talented Asian player who is being racially stereotyped.

Maybe it’s from seeing the previews so many times, but I’m interested. The last basketball-related movie we saw was the one with Ben Affleck as an alcoholic coach of a young basketball team. This seems to center more specifically on one player.

Anticipation: 6/10

Chaos Walking

Opening 2-26-2021 in Theaters: Tom and Jerry

Theaters: 2/26/2021

Wednesday, week #9 of 2021 (2/26 – 2/28/2021)

Another week with only one wide release movie in theaters. This one, like last week’s Nomadland, is also being released on streaming as well as in theaters. Tom and Jerry will join Wonder Woman: 1984, The Little Things and Judas and the Black Messiah as the 4th of 17 movies Warner Bros. is planning on releasing day and date throughout 2021.

Tom and Jerry

If you want to watch a bunch of Tom and Jerry cartoons to prepare for the live action + animated hybrid, HBO Max has a wide selection available. Later this year, another Space Jam is coming, this time starring Lebron James instead of Michael Jordan, mixing Bugs Bunny and friends with a live action basketball adventure.

I have mixed feelings on this one. The trailer is promising and I’m a huge fan of older cartoons but will admit not watching much of this one. We might come out of this loving it or, well, who knows?

Anticipation: 5/10

Some folks we know have commented that they are very interested in seeing this. We hope it’s a fun watch! Wherever you are watching movies, happy watching to you!
