Month #3 in 2021 looks a lot different now than it did six months ago, even more so a year ago. Last year who can forget the event that first started shutting down theaters (hint). We were in Vegas at the time and it was strange seeing the strip shut down.
Streaming movies would be the only place new movies could be seen for almost six months. Then they opened for a couple months only to close again in November. Theaters in our area reopened at the beginning of February and we were able to watch 9 movies in theaters last month.
This month Coming 2 America has been picked up by Amazon Prime and will start streaming to Prime Video subscribers on March 5. Raya and The Last Dragon is borrowing a page from the book of Disney+ Premium ($30 extra charge) on Disney+ and Warner Bros. has two more movies coming out both in theaters and on HBO Max including Godzilla vs. Kong.
For historical reference, we’re including the films originally planned for this month, delays and reschedules dates when available as of this writing.
We’re also including some notable streaming releases, but this list isn’t meant to be all-inclusive. Weekly on Thursdays usually we post a “WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND” list covering streaming in more depth.
All March 2021 movie release dates unless otherwise indicated are for the United States, the release dates in other countries can/may/will vary.

Weekend #9 of 52 (2/25 – 2/28/2021) for 2021 Picks By Streaming Service
The final weekend of February 2021 is upon us. Streaming channels are showing no sign of slowing down releasing new movies and TV shows while the theater scene continues to be in a state of paralysis of new titles. It’s like one here, two there and just ghost town movie theaters. We were saddened this week to see a beautiful IMAX screening of a film that had three people in attendance at a 7pm showing of Nomadland, two of which were us. The theater probably seated close to 200 people. Theaters are doing great business in China and some other countries.
Have been saying all along that theaters need to get more new movies showing in them, but for whatever reason that’s not happening. Probably to blame is the severe lack of moviegoers attending them. As mentioned previously, this is a slow time anyway for theaters, the first quarter of the year. This year is a bit unique because the academy extended the award eligibility window into early 2021 (see: Oscars 2021 Still On As Planned As In-Person Event, Not Zoom or Virtual)

Weekend #8 of 52 (2/18 – 2/21/2021) for 2021 Picks By Streaming Service
As we push toward the end of February, the streaming channels continue to be the place to go for new movie releases.
Day and date releases are becoming the norm and not the exception during the pandemic. Case in point, Nomadland, both in theaters and streaming on Hulu. Last week was Warner Bros. Judas and the Black Messiah.
Was planning to watch Nomadand in theaters, but being this is our weekend spending with our grandchildren, it will likely be more convenient watching on Hulu. A similar convenience happened with Judas and the Black Messiah.
This has us thinking that convenience could also be working against theaters, also. We’ve seen six new movies in theaters since theaters reopened on February 5, so thinking we’re very much supporting the cinematic experience. In addition to the elephant in the room that nobody wants to hear about any more, convenience just might be the other c-word enemy of box office sales.
Or maybe it’s all the movies that are c-grade. There haven’t been an influx of awesome movies for people to want to go out to theaters — and there rarely are in the first quarter of the year — so that’s worth keeping in perspective. .

Month #2 in 2021 feels similar to every month since April 2020: a bunch of movies delayed and pushed forward, an increasing number of new movies premiering on streaming and VOD/PVOD.
There is one bright spot on the theater release scene and it’s WarnerMedia’s day and date in theater and on HBO Max plan (see: ), providing 17 movies over 2021 providing both theaters and HBO Max a somewhat guaranteed release schedule. They might have been criticized for this move, but they’re becoming one of the few dependable studios, along with Universal and Focus Features that are supporting theaters with at least some new movie content during the pandemic.
This month we’re getting Tom and Jerry, an animated and live action feature film. Will it be any good? The trailer is below.
For historical reference, we’re including the films originally planned for this month, delays and reschedules dates when available as of this writing.

Here we go again! The third week of the new year and, like stated here last week, it just doesn’t have the traditional feel of a new year. It still feels like April 2020 repeating itself like Groundhog Day.
A few interesting looking movies releasing new this weekend. Netflix has committed to 71 new movie releases in 2021 with this weekend’s premiere pictured right: Outside The Wire is a military sci-fi action flick with robots and humans fighting the good fight together. Love that they call the robots “gumps.” Get me a box of chocolates, please!
On Amazon Prime, a return to the turbulent 60s for a fictional meeting between four key fugures (Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Sam Cooke and Jim Brown) discussing their roles in civil rights: One Night In Miami.
The TV side of things, particularly on Disney+, is active this weekend with the premier two episodes (of 9 total planned) of Wandavision on Disney+. This new series follows the events of Avengers: Endgame.
