Tom’s Guide Article Declares HBO Max As Currently The Best Streaming Service

We’ve spent a lot of time watching HBO Max since it launched. The popular opinion seems to be to bash it as some kind of lesser streaming service compared to the top dog, Netflix.

When Warner announced they were releasing all 17 major films on both HBO Max and in theaters and were giving 20% off the six month rate, we didn’t complain, we subscribed (see: Don’t Count Out HBO Max in 2021)

The quality of movies and shows on HBO Max can’t be beat. But I should add a caveat that the nuts and bolts of the actual service still need a lot of work. The app and website can be buggy and crash. And HBO Max doesn’t offer many titles in 4K, though that’s not much different from other streaming services. Netflix does have 4K but you have to pay more. Advertisement The interface is so-so, but the HBO Max navigation does stand out in one way: the genre pages have an A-Z listing you can peruse. No other streamer has this feature; they all display titles within themed collections or by recommendations. HBO does that, too, but it’s so helpful just to see every movie on HBO Max by alphabetical order.

Sorry Netflix, HBO Max is the best streaming service now — here’s why | Tom’s Guide

Netflix is sort of in a class by itself at the current time. They have spent multi billions producing so much original content that they can just continue to crank new original movie and TV series after another. During the pandemic, they’ve also been in on the bidding war for movies meant for theaters but sold to streaming instead.

Objectively, comparing Netflix to the other streamers for original content is challenging. From a quantity standpoint, there is no comparison. Every week on Thursdays when we do our What To Watch On Streaming posts, Netflix consistently outproduces the other streamers.

But quantity isn’t the same as quality. Is it better to have one great movie and/or TV series debut each week or have a half dozen or more of varying quality movie and TV shows to choose from? For those of us that want to watch the best movies we can see, not the most movies, the less is more strategy is more sound. We’ve talked about the quantity vs. quality situation with Netflix before (see: Does Netflix Release Too Many Originals? Maybe Ask New CMO Bozoma Saint John)

All that said, HBO Max might not be superior to Netflix in number of subscribers, but from what’s available to watch on it right now, even at the higher monthly price point, there are plenty of movies and TV shows to check out. It’s refreshing to read articles like this one that aren’t bashing HBO Max for not having 100+ million subscribers.

Whichever is your favorite streaming channel, it’s great to see movie lovers have multiple options to choose from. Disney+ has the family, Star Wars and Marvel corners covered. HBO Max has several great TV shows (Friends!), a bunch of great movies. Amazon Prime has its own slate of originals, some very, very good and Netflix has its originals. Then there are the others like Hulu, CBS All Access soon to be Paramount+ and Peacock, not to mention a boatload of niche streamers like Shudder, Discovery+ and so on.

And those are just the paid streamers, there is a whole bunch of FREE, ad-supported channels to choose from. So many, that we can’t even cover them all. The Roku Channel, Tubi, Pluto and so on.

Whatever you want to watch, you can probably find it playing somewhere. Good times for home movie watchers, anyway. The cinema landscape might be struggling, but these are active, productive times for streamers.

What’s your current favorite streaming channel? Or do you have multiple favorites?

WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND #9 of 2021 Movie and TV Streaming Picks – Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Apple TV+, Shudder

Theaters/HBO Max: Feb 26

Weekend #9 of 52 (2/25 – 2/28/2021) for 2021 Picks By Streaming Service

The final weekend of February 2021 is upon us. Streaming channels are showing no sign of slowing down releasing new movies and TV shows while the theater scene continues to be in a state of paralysis of new titles. It’s like one here, two there and just ghost town movie theaters. We were saddened this week to see a beautiful IMAX screening of a film that had three people in attendance at a 7pm showing of Nomadland, two of which were us. The theater probably seated close to 200 people. Theaters are doing great business in China and some other countries.

Have been saying all along that theaters need to get more new movies showing in them, but for whatever reason that’s not happening. Probably to blame is the severe lack of moviegoers attending them. As mentioned previously, this is a slow time anyway for theaters, the first quarter of the year. This year is a bit unique because the academy extended the award eligibility window into early 2021 (see: Oscars 2021 Still On As Planned As In-Person Event, Not Zoom or Virtual)

The Snyder Cut of Justice League Is 1.33:1 Ratio, Not Widescreen Available March 18, 2021 at Midnight PT (GMT-8)

(Note: Original article linked and quoted gave an incorrect time that HBO Max would drop the Snyder cut. They edited the article and time, so I changed to midnight. The original article stated it would be available at 11pm PT on March 17, but due to Daylight Savings Time, it’s off by one hour. Got to love DST!)

With The Snyder Cut of Justice League coming in March 2021 to HBO Max we’re learning more details about the film, in addition to the mammoth run time (see: The 4-hour Snyder Cut of Justice League Will Premiere On March 18, 2021).

It was shot in a way intended to use IMAX screens. In fact, the film may (?) be released theatrically on IMAX (with intermissions or not, we haven’t learned yet) in addition to HBO Max. This should make Snyder purists that truly want to see it on the big screen.

Sources have confirmed to IGN that Zack Snyder’s four-hour reassembling of Justice League is using the boxy 1.33:1 ratio. So the question is why? Well, the director’s love for the format stemmed from the IMAX scenes he shot for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which were rendered in full frame, in the 1.43:1 aspect ratio. Ever since that movie, Snyder’s been enamored with the square composition and the idea of using it for future projects.

Why The Snyder Cut of Justice League Isn’t Widescreen – IGN

I’m interested in seeing this in IMAX. Am hopeful there will be an intermission, however, because four hours is just way too long for a movie. Maybe the story will lend itself to the runtime, so don’t want to condemn anything before seeing, but just throwing out that if this happens then this will be the longest movie we’ve seen in theaters in, well, ever.

Have you seen any other four hour movies in theaters before? If so, please tell us what the experience was like? Was there an intermission?

The Snyder Cut of Justice League will be available at 11pm PT on March 17, 2021 on HBO Max.

Velma Animated Series Greenlit for HBO Max – Any Chance For Crossover with Harley Quinn?

Mindy Kaling will provide the voice for Velma as she gets her own animated series

Back in July 2020, we commented on news that orange shirt, black-rimmed spectacle, Velma was finally coming out as gay (see: Velma “officially” a lesbian in Scooby-Doo is relevant to the show … how?). At the time, we were reviewing the original 1969 Scooby-Doo Where Are You? first season episode as part of our Saturday morning TV cartoon. What is interesting here is we thought at the time that a spinoff show could be the place to explore Velma’s personal life in more detail.

Well, that appears to be exactly what HBO Max is going to provide, announcing earlier this month the new series is in development.

HBO Max announced Wednesday that Mindy Kaling will executive produce and voice the lead in Velma, a comedic origin story about the “unsung and underappreciated brains” of the iconic mystery-solving squad. Velma is described as “an original and humorous spin that unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America’s most beloved mystery solvers.”

Mindy Kaling to star in Velma animated series about Scooby-Doo character | EW.com

What is particularly fascinating is Harley Quinn, the animated series, is in a lesbian relationship with her friend Poison Ivy and that excellent series is also greenlit for a new season. That show almost certainly will explore the relationship between the two comic book antiheroes.

Here is the question: is there any possibility that both animated series will cross over? What if Velma comes into the Harley Quinn universe? Is this too far-fetched?

Sometimes the different animated universes collide. This happens in the comic books somewhat frequently. At least for one episode it would be cool to see Velma and Harley Quinn and company together in a mystery of some sort to solve.

Before saying this idea is completely implausible, just think how many thought we’d ever get a standlalone animated series featuring Velma?

WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND #8 of 2021 Movie and TV Streaming Picks – Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Shudder

Theaters/Hulu: Feb 19

Weekend #8 of 52 (2/18 – 2/21/2021) for 2021 Picks By Streaming Service

As we push toward the end of February, the streaming channels continue to be the place to go for new movie releases.

Day and date releases are becoming the norm and not the exception during the pandemic. Case in point, Nomadland, both in theaters and streaming on Hulu. Last week was Warner Bros. Judas and the Black Messiah.

Was planning to watch Nomadand in theaters, but being this is our weekend spending with our grandchildren, it will likely be more convenient watching on Hulu. A similar convenience happened with Judas and the Black Messiah.

This has us thinking that convenience could also be working against theaters, also. We’ve seen six new movies in theaters since theaters reopened on February 5, so thinking we’re very much supporting the cinematic experience. In addition to the elephant in the room that nobody wants to hear about any more, convenience just might be the other c-word enemy of box office sales.

Or maybe it’s all the movies that are c-grade. There haven’t been an influx of awesome movies for people to want to go out to theaters — and there rarely are in the first quarter of the year — so that’s worth keeping in perspective. .

Opening 2-11-2021 in Theaters: The Mauritanian, Land, Judas and the Black Messiah

Theaters: 2/11/2021

Wednesday, week #7 of 2021 (2/11 – 2/14/2021)

The last time movie theaters were allowed via government order to be open in Washington State near Seattle where we live was the week of 11/13/2020 and AMC theaters reopened Friday 2/4/2021.

This coming weekend three new movies are premiering in theaters: The Mauritanian, Land and Judas and the Black Messiah on both HBO Max and in theaters.

Judas and the Black Messiah
[FIRST LOOK]

Movie #3 of 17 for the HBO Max and theater simultaneous release schedule following Wonder Woman: 1984 and The Little Things.

Black Panthers, racism, rising against oppression. Some would say these topics never get old, but purely from an excited about watching these type of movies perspective? For me, not so much. Will admit this looks among the better ones for this subject matter.

Not sure if we’ll watch this in theaters on HBO Max. Not sure it’s the type of movie, unlike Wonder Woman or Godzilla vs. Kong that simply demand to be seen on the big screen, but we’ll see what we do. Not many new movies coming out the next few weeks, so probably will see this in theaters.

Anticipation: 4/10

Land

Hmm, this is one of those trailers that has me not sure what to think. Could go either way, so going to put anticipation in the middle. Haven’t heard much about this film before now, so it is sort of coming out of nowhere.

Anticipation: 5/10

The Mauritanian

Most looking forward to watching this one. I guess the whole 9/11 topic feels like it hasn’t fully been explored to me from every conceivable angle. For awhile, Hollywood was leaving this alone. Being it’s the 20 year anniversary of the horrible event, am guessing we’ll see more movies this year featuring this as a backdrop.

Anticipation: 7/10

Are you looking forward to seeing any/all of these movies? Wherever you are watching movies, happy watching to you!

FIRST LOOK: Judas And The Black Messiah Movie (2021)

Here comes #3 of 17 in the Warner Bros. strategy to release movies in both theaters and on HBO Max for the first month.

Chairman Fred Hampton was 21 years old when he was assassinated by the FBI, who coerced a petty criminal, William O’Neal, to betray him and the Black Panther Party. In 1968, Hampton became Chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party, who were fighting for freedom, the power to determine the destiny of the Black community, and an end to police brutality. Hampton was inspiring a generation, which put him directly in the line of fire of the FBI and Chicago PD. To destroy the revolution, they had to do it from both the outside and the inside. Facing prison, O’Neal is offered a deal by the FBI: if he will infiltrate the Black Panthers and provide intel on Hampton, he will walk free. O’Neal lives in fear that his treachery will be discovered even as he rises in the ranks. But as Hampton’s fiery message draws him in, he cannot escape the deadly trajectory of his betrayal.
