FIRST LOOK: Grizzly II: The Revenge

Back in September 2020, we came across a movie from 1983 starring George Clooney, Charlie Sheen and Laura Dern (see: Nearly 40 year old film featuring George Clooney, Charlie Sheen and Laura Dern to be released in Fall 2020) that had never been released.

While it took almost 40 years to finally be completed, recently that happened.

At the time we read it might be released in the fall of 2020, but that didn’t happen. Our original post received some interest, so clearly others were curious like us. Good news, because this film is now available as of this writing on PVOD.

It’s available on Google Play to rent for $3.99 and buy for $7.99 USD. The original movie, Grizzly, which didn’t star any of the three above named famous actors is also available for purchase.

Just for those who didn’t click through on our original post (the pre-FIRST LOOK, I guess), here is the official trailer:

Am thinking about dropping a few bucks to check this out, if nothing other than to see all three of these actors onscreen early in their respective careers. Does the movie look cheesy? Of course. On the horror front, though, got to love the box art with the bear all in outstretched hug mode. Love the dialogue, “We’ve got to kill it!” The bear just wants to eat, come on now 😉

Has anybody reading seen this yet? Your non-spoiler thoughts in the comments area, please?

Grizzly II: The Revenge is available on PVOD as of January 8, 2021.

FIRST LOOK: Herself

Amazon Prime Video picked up this LIMITED theatrical release on December 30.

When Sandra (Clare Dunne) escapes her abusive partner with her two young children, finding a home to call their own seems impossible. After months of struggling, she draws inspiration from one of her daughter’s bedtime stories and hits upon the idea of self-building an affordable home. She finds an architect who provides her with plans and is offered land by Peggy (Harriet Walter), a woman she cleans for. Aido (Conleth Hill), a building contractor, appears willing to help, too. But as her past rears its head in the form of Gary (Ian Lloyd Anderson), her possessive ex, and as bureaucrats fight back against her independent spirit, will Sandra be able to rebuild her life from the ground up?

FIRST LOOK: Death to 2020 – Netflix

Fitting title for a Netflix — and the life we all lived in — 2020 mockumentary. Also from Charles Brooker, the mastermind behind the world of Black Mirror.

If you’re one of many who’ve cursed the year 2020 more times than you can count, Netflix hears you. The streaming giant just announced Death to 2020, a “comedy event” from the creators of Black Mirror that features some huge names. The announced cast includes Samuel L. Jackson, Hugh Grant, Lisa Kudrow, Leslie Jones, Joe Keery (of Stranger Things fame), Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley and The Big Sick), Tracey Ullman, Cristin Milioti (The Wolf of Wall Street), Diane Morgan (After Life) and Samson Kayo (Famalam).

Official trailer:

I don’t know how good or not this will be, but I’m going to watch it tomorrow. Part of me wants to forget most of 2020, because it was among the worst years in my 50+ years. As far as world events go, 9/11 is certainly up there. Strangely enough, we were in Vegas when that happened as well as when Vegas shut down in 2020 for the pandemic. It’s supposed to be the place people go for serendipity, not sorrow.

Are you planning on checking out this mockumentary?

Death to 2020 will be available for streaming on Netflix on December 27, 2020.

FIRST LOOK: Metalocalypse (TV Series) – HBO Max

Dethklok is a metal band that started as an adult animated TV series on Adult Swim. Such a great name for a metal band show: Metalocalypse.

Part of the show’s appeal has always been its intersection with the metal scene IRL — a subculture that has never lacked for self-awareness. From the outside, the world of heavy metal music might seem frightening — even dangerous — but the scene has always been more about pageantry than pain. There’s always been a winking understanding between the performers and the fans that heavy metal is one big costume party, and death has always been more of a theme than some kind of religious totem. Perhaps that’s why it was so easy for Metalocalypse and Dethklok to crawl off the screen and into the third dimension.

The animated comedy everyone’s binging on HBO Max

This has been on my watchlist for awhile. With WarnerMedia selling Crunchyroll (see: Sony to pay AT&T $1.2 Billion in Cash for Crunchyroll), I sure hope they plan to keep a focus on animated content going forward.

Metalocalypse Season 1 is available for streaming on HBO Max.

FIRST LOOK: A Creepshow Holiday Special – Shudder

While we wait for Season 2 of Creepshow on Shudder — delayed by the pandemic — we have received a couple related items to tide us over. The animated special around Halloween and now a Christmas special featuring a live action story.

Robert Weston has noticed some odd changes lately that his doctors can’t explain. The only explanation for his symptoms is that he might be… a werewolf? In search of an answer, he discovers an unusual support group where others can help him learn the truth, but what he discovers is far more sinister than he could have ever imagined. The rag-tag group of misfits must band together to fight the assassin who has been hunting them for centuries.

Trailer:

Overlooked mentioning this was available on this week’s streaming WHAT TO WATCH (see: WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND #51 of 2020 Movie and TV Streaming Picks – Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu), but making that right now with this FIRST LOOK. There are various FREE trial options available, either for Shudder directly or through AMC+, if you haven’t tried that. So multiple options if you’d like to watch this weekend. It’s definitely on my list!

A Creepshow Holiday Special is available for streaming on Shudder and AMC+ as of December 19, 2020.

FIRST LOOK: Guest House (2020) – Netflix

Remember Pauly Shore? You know, Encino Man, Son in Law, Bio Dome and the wannabe Stripes clone called In The Army. He had some other films, but most were dumber than the film before.

Shore is back in a new movie, and it seems like he’s playing the slacker stoner role again.

An engaged couple’s new dream home comes with one small catch — a perennial party animal who lives in the guesthouse.

Guest House (2020) – Rotten Tomatoes

Trailer:

He might be sporting a beard, but it seems like the same Pauly Shore from the 90s. Will admit I’m kind of interested in watching this. Might have a few laugh-worthy moments. You interested in seeing?

Guest House is streaming on December 18 on Netflix.

FIRST LOOK: I’m Your Woman (2020) – Amazon Prime Video

Adult protecting baby stories are bound to be on the rise after the success of The Mandalorian. Given this movie is not science fiction or Star Wars, but the basic storyline of an adult protecting a child is as timeless as infinity.

In this 1970s set crime drama, a woman is forced to go on the run after her husband betrays his partners, sending her and her baby on a dangerous journey.

FIRST LOOK: The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee

We missed Paul Hogan at the elderly age of 81 playing, well, himself in a meta movie of the Crocodile Dundee star back in July on Amazon Prime Video. How did we miss this? I would have watched it, just to see what he was up to these days.

I enjoyed Crocodile Dundee, particularly the love story with his wife Linda Kozlowski. Alas, Linda and Paul are divorced in 2014 according to Wikipedia. She is only 62 in 2020, where Hogan again, is roughly 20 years her senior.

So, what about this new Paul Hogan movie that isn’t on Amazon Prime any more and will be streaming on VOD this month — likely to be followed by a return to some streaming channel.

It’s directed by Dean Murphy, whose last project was another meta-comedy (2018’s That’s Not My Dog! in which Hogan also made one of his rare appearances), and he co-wrote the script with Robert Mond (The Subjects). The movie is also headlined by Chevy Chase, John Cleese, and Olivia Newton-John. Initially slated for release in theatres in April, that didn’t happen for obvious reasons, and instead it was released exclusively on Amazon Prime Video on July, however that exclusivity period is ending soon and it’ll be heading to on-demand services in December.

Paul Hogan stars in the meta-comedy The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee

Official trailer:

Again, wondering how I missed this in July on Amazon Prime Video. Did anybody reading see this back then? If not, we both will have a chance on VOD. Stating the obvious here, but Hogan looks really, really old in this film. Nothing wrong with old actors, especially if they do new, inventive roles, but there’s something youthful about the adventurous character Crocodile Dundee that old age just doesn’t fit. Hogan must have known that, so he’s only playing himself that once played Dundee. I see how someone thought that could work, given the right script.

The meta route for the subject matter might be funny, but I keep wanting to see him do Crocodile Dundee again and it seems that was a one and done thing for his career. Do you have any interest in seeing this movie?

The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee will be available on VOD for streaming December 11, 2020.

FIRST LOOK: All My Life

Based on a true story, get your tissue ready if you’re heading to a theater in your area for this one. These sad stories about people who get the death sentence of a seemingly unbeatable form of cancer and yet somehow rise above the diagnosis are difficult to watch.

Just as they’re planning their wedding and preparing to live the rest of their lives together, Solomon gets a sobering cancer diagnosis that takes a turn for the worse when it spreads through his body, cruelly and abruptly cutting his future short. Still, Jennifer is determined to marry him regardless of his diagnosis, and with help from friends, family and even strangers, they put on the wedding they never thought was possible.

All My Life True Story: Meet the Couple Behind the Movie

Official trailer:

This doesn’t sound like a faith-based movie, but have seen one of these recently. It reminds me a little of the Jeremy Camp story, I Still Believe ⭐️⭐️½

All My Life will be available in whatever theaters are open on December 4, 2020.

FIRST LOOK: The Christmas Chronicles 2 – Netflix

A year ago, I was pleasantly surprised by The Christmas Chronicles. Here was Kurt Snake Plisskin Russell as an uber cool Santa and they weren’t buying him. I didn’t think he’d make a very good Santa Claus and was wrong.

So, here we are a year later and Netflix is delivering a sequel with Mrs. Claus played by Goldie Hawn..

Teenager Kate Pierce is reunited with Santa Claus when a troublemaker threatens to cancel Christmas — forever.

The Christmas Chronicles 2 (2020) – Rotten Tomatoes

Official trailer:

This looks like a good movie to watch this holiday weekend. Maybe not looking quite as humorous as the first one, but will still watch. Are you interested in watching?

The Christmas Chronicles 2 is available for streaming on Netflix as of November 26, 2020.
