6 Movies COMING TO THEATERS in April 2021

Theaters/HBO Max: Apr 23

Month #4 in 2021 seems to be looking up with potentially bigger movie releases, the first of which is Godzilla vs. Kong at the end of March/beginning of April leading to Mortal Kombat on April 16, both are from Warner Bros. and following their plan to have movies released in theaters and on HBO Max on the same day.

While the number of new theatrical releases is still very small, it looks like it will be increasing as we head into the summer months. Regal will finally be reopening many of its US theaters again soon, maybe.

On an incidental note, we’ve been seeing more people attending the theater. We’ve made it up to 17 movies seen in theaters in 2021 as of this writing.

For historical reference, we’re including the films originally planned for this month, delays and reschedules dates when available as of this writing.

We’re also including some notable streaming releases, but this list isn’t meant to be all-inclusive. Weekly on Thursdays usually we post a “WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND” list covering streaming in more depth.

8 Movies COMING TO THEATERS in March 2021

Theaters/HBO Max: Mar 31

Month #3 in 2021 looks a lot different now than it did six months ago, even more so a year ago. Last year who can forget the event that first started shutting down theaters (hint). We were in Vegas at the time and it was strange seeing the strip shut down.

Streaming movies would be the only place new movies could be seen for almost six months. Then they opened for a couple months only to close again in November. Theaters in our area reopened at the beginning of February and we were able to watch 9 movies in theaters last month.

This month Coming 2 America has been picked up by Amazon Prime and will start streaming to Prime Video subscribers on March 5. Raya and The Last Dragon is borrowing a page from the book of Disney+ Premium ($30 extra charge) on Disney+ and Warner Bros. has two more movies coming out both in theaters and on HBO Max including Godzilla vs. Kong.

8 Movies COMING TO THEATERS in February 2021

Theaters/HBO Max: Feb 26

Month #2 in 2021 feels similar to every month since April 2020: a bunch of movies delayed and pushed forward, an increasing number of new movies premiering on streaming and VOD/PVOD.

There is one bright spot on the theater release scene and it’s WarnerMedia’s day and date in theater and on HBO Max plan (see: ), providing 17 movies over 2021 providing both theaters and HBO Max a somewhat guaranteed release schedule. They might have been criticized for this move, but they’re becoming one of the few dependable studios, along with Universal and Focus Features that are supporting theaters with at least some new movie content during the pandemic.

This month we’re getting Tom and Jerry, an animated and live action feature film. Will it be any good? The trailer is below.

5 Movies COMING TO THEATERS in December 2020

Theaters & HBO Max: Dec 25

All movie theaters are closed by governor’s order in our state (Washington) until December 14, 2020, but the following are movies planned for release in other parts of the United States during December.

With the second government mandated closure of movie theaters in 2020 it’s been a dreadful years for movie theater patrons and owners. We’ve somehow managed to see 45 or so new movies in theaters. That seems like a lot, all things considered, and there have been a small few good movies worth checking out. It’s been one of those years, all around, that we just want and need to put behind us.

For historical reference, we’re including the films originally planned along with their rescheduled release dates, several have been pushed to 2021.

All I can say about 2021 is if the pandemic subsides and moviegoers return, the theaters have a chance to rebound in a big way. The 2021 schedule is looking strong, bubbling over from Christmas 2020. Fingers crossed!

All My Life
(Dec 4)

Inspired by a true story.

Wonder Woman 1984
FIRST LOOK
(Dec 25)

News Of The World
(Dec 25)

Tom Hanks is always worth checking out. He’s going western on us here.

Promising Young Woman
(Dec 25)

Saw a lot of previews in theaters for this one prior to the second shutdown. This is giving me a strong Harley Quinn like vibe, character-wise anyway. Like she’s about to go postal on all men. Maybe this is the Birds of Prey tale we should have gotten? It’s not Harley Quinn, just to be clear.

Monster Hunter
(Dec 30)

Saw a few previews in theater for this as well and the effects look great. It’s based on a videogame which I haven’t played yet, but interested in checking that out, too. Looking forward to seeing this and Wonder Woman 1984 most of these five films.

7 Movies COMING TO THEATERS in November 2020

Theaters: Nov 13

Still hovering around 1-2 max new movies widely released in theaters in November. With classics and drop-in movies those with the AMC Stubs A-List pass will barely fill up their three movies per week included with the plan.

The results of the presidential election could give studios cold or warm feet — or maybe the results will have zero impact on if further delays and moves are coming.

At any rate, we’ve waited almost to the end of October to get this out, covering any movie date moves and changes so this would be as accurate as possible when posted. Movies get moved around in the current pandemic frequently, so not sure how reliable this will be by the end of the month. You can follow along on the 2020 list page for the updates. We also added the 2021 page to start looking forward to movies being released in theaters next year.

For historical reference, we’re including the films originally planned along with their rescheduled release dates, several have been pushed to 2021.

FIRST LOOK: 92+ Movies Coming To Theaters In 2021

Watchlist as of 10/2020 – includes some 2020 movies

2021, at least from what’s planned, looks like a good year for new movie theater releases.

Hopefully, the pandemic will not be a major factor — again — in continuing to delay titles but as of this post in October 2020, that shadow looms.

Bookmark this post and return to see what’s coming out when in the future.

As movie release dates are frequently changing, some of the information below might be inaccurate now or at times in the future. This post, like our 2020 post (see: FIRST LOOK: 75+ Movies Coming To Theaters In 2020), is regularly updated as new info is made available.

Note: this post will be updated periodically to include links to new coverage as it is posted and becomes available throughout 2021.

FIRST LOOK – contains the first time a movie was looked at with the information at that time. As a monthly movies coming soon posts are released (typically 30-45 days before the new month to allow for studio release changes), it will be linked in the date heading and contain more information about the movies scheduled to come out during that month.

JANUARY 2021 (6 movies)

Mortal Kombat (UPDATE: moved to April 2021)- videogame movies have traditionally by and large been horrible, but I loved this videogame which reminded me of Bruce Lee’s Game of Death. The finishing moves in the game are awesome, but sometimes videogames just don’t translate to movies. They keep trying though.

5 Movies COMING TO THEATERS in October 2020

Theaters: October 16

Somewhat surprisingly, there is one more wide release planned in October than September.

We’ve been following the historic movie theater scene in 2020 and what a year so far, huh? Not from amazing movies coming out and huge box office numbers — what could/should/might have been in some parallel universe — from everything that seems to prevent that from happening.

Brief recap. In mid March all US theaters closed. In late August they started reopening and as of this writing at the end of September an estimated 70% of theaters have not reopened. The two major markets, New York and California still have many closures, but I keep reading that they’re planning on reopening soon. In our local area — not too far from the Seattle area where most of this all started — a bunch of theaters, like a couple dozen at least, remain shuttered. These areas are still in Phase 2 of the local government shutdown and cannot reopen theaters yet. These local restrictions are, very slowly, being relaxed and unless there are missteps with the virus, should reopen before No Time To Die (ironic title, I must admit) is scheduled to come out.

Tenet, the biggest movie since the pandemic started launched hasn’t had the US box office sales hoped for. Blame on this in part is placed on the two major markets with theaters still closed. Meanwhile.

Netflix: Oct 7

Below you’ll find the movies listed as being released in theaters before month’s end as well as the streaming and VOD movies and at the bottom the movies that were originally planned to be released in September and delayed along with the current release dates, if known.

As has been the case since the end of March 2020, all titles remain subject to change, but since we’re actually seeing movies in theaters again, if this positive trend of reopening theaters continues, we should be able to get back to a schedule of releasing these coming soon lists sooner. In the meantime there’s no point in releasing ~45 days or so before the month due to the studio changes and postponements.

For historical reference, we’re including the films originally planned along with their rescheduled release dates, several have been pushed to 2021.

If you’d like to see a list of all movies released in 2020 click here (that post is being updated throughout the year). We have a post showing all wide release movies scheduled in 2021, but as of this writing is still in draft status due to frequent changes being made. Would like to say we’re confident no further changes will be made, but that isn’t realistic currently. We’re going to post it sooner or later, probably sooner. Several movies are planned for 2021 that we had planned to see in 2020 and there are still 2021 planned titles coming to fruition — maybe.

Here, for now, let’s focus on October 2020.

All movie release dates unless otherwise indicated are for the United States, the release dates in other countries can/may/will vary.

    • Death on the Nile (delayed, moved from Oct 9 to Oct 23, move #2 to Dec 18, 2020)

As we look through the DELAYED list above, those 11 delayed movies would have been a major boost to movie theater interest. Instead, we’ll get the five movies below … maybe.

The War With Grandpa
FIRST LOOK

(October 9)

Of the five wide release movies planned in October, this is #2 am most looking forward to seeing. It has a fun looking old vs. young vibe, especially with that wacky dodgeball scene. I like how De Niro asks the older woman if she wants to get back at the kids and she’s like “yeah!” This could be a dud or fun or … well, it could be underwhelming. I’m going to try and stay positive on this one. I mean, Christopher Walken, Robert De Niro … these guys are talented actors. Don’t lay an egg on us, please!

Honest Thief
(delayed, moved from Sept 4 to Oct 9, move #2 to Oct 16)

Somewhere I remember reading or seeing a video that Liam Neeson wanted to get out of action films. Or at least films like Taken, but maybe I’m dreaming, because this role seems very Taken-ish. Especially with his “I’m coming to get you” revenge line. I like Liam Neeson’s quiet guy goes postal routine.

With Wonder Woman pushed to Christmas day, this becomes the standout title of October in theaters. Am looking most forward to this one.

2 Hearts
(delayed, Sept 11 to October 16)

Lukewarm interest from the trailer, but of course we’ll see it regardless. This might be an OK date night movie, I don’t know.

The Empty Man
FIRST LOOK
(delayed, August 7 to December 4, 2020, move #2 to Oct 23, 2020)

No official trailer available as of this posting.

October is the perfect month for horror films. We had some good ones planned that got postponed, and no idea how this one will fare, should it go on as expected, but it’s #3 of the 5 for films I’m most looking forward to seeing in October.

I’m intrigued from the comic book aspect and more than a little surprised we don’t see a trailer for this yet. It’s like three weeks away and still no official trailer?

Fatale
(moved AHEAD from Oct 20, 2020 to June 19, move #2 delayed to Oct 30)

No official trailer available as of this posting.

I don’t know much of anything about this movie other than the plot synopsis on IMDB. That’s not enough to make it move from #5 of 5 for looking to see in October 2020.

Which of these movies, if any, are you looking forward to seeing?

Of the list of movies above released or delayed, what are you most looking forward to seeing? Are you going to wait for these movies to come to streaming or venture into theaters? If you’re still in a holding pattern, it’s all good. Let’s chat about it in the comments.

As always, wishing you all happy viewing, whatever you’re watching!

4 Movies COMING TO THEATERS in September 2020

Theaters have begun reopening and this month will be the first box office tentpole since the pandemic, Tenet.

The early international numbers coming in for Tenet are promising.

7 Movies COMING TO THEATERS in August 2020 with 9 Rescheduled

The New Mutants are due in theaters August 28

Can’t wait any longer to post what’s coming in August, can we?

Today, the first of August, theaters should have been open all across the United States. With the exception of some drive-ins and scattered independent theaters, that’s not the reality.

The new date for the big three theater chains to reopen 80% of the theater – as of this writing anyway — is scheduled to be August 21 (see: Regal Cinemas now saying August 21 it will reopen in US, Tenet goes international first, then US).

Below you’ll find the movies listed as being released in theaters before month’s end as well as the streaming and VOD movies and at the bottom the movies that were originally planned to be released in August and delayed along with the current release dates, if known.

As has been the case since the end of March 2020, all titles are very subject to change.

For historical reference, I’m including the films originally planned along with their rescheduled release dates, several have been pushed to 2021.
