The first of the month is more than April Fool’s it’s movies rotating in and out of the main streaming service time. WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND #13 of 2021 Movie and TV Streaming Picks – Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video, Peacock, Hulu, Shudder

Netflix: Mar 26

Weekend #13 of 52 (3/25 – 3/28/2021) for 2021 Picks By Streaming Service

The last weekend of the month is not without new movies and TV shows coming out. Notably, Bad Trip, which tried to make an appearance in theaters, but another movie sidelined by the pandemic.

And then it was accidentally released by Amazon Prime Video on April 17, 2020. It got taken down, but not before pirates copied it and released on illegal back channels. Then it sold to Netflix and fast forward to March 26, when it will make it’s first official, non-accidental release.

If you’re thinking, wow, what a bad trip, that title works on many levels. I don’t know how good the movie will be, but have to check it out for the bizarre release history alone.

Weekend #11 of 52 (3/11 – 3/14/2021) for 2021 Picks By Streaming Service

This week I’ve been busy with my job and haven’t been as focused on the entertainment scene and movies. We did find time to see the two new movies in theaters released (see: Opening 3-11-2021 in Theaters: The Father, Long Weekend) and keep our long running streak going of a movie review a day, although it took several days to post the reviews.

Then Friday came and no new FIRST LOOKs were posted and Thursday came and went and didn’t take a look at the streaming scene. Here it’s Sunday and finally had time to analyze what’s going on this weekend on the various streaming channels. Also peeked into the next couple days.

What are the major streaming releases, if any this weekend? Did something big get released? The long awaited Snyder Cut of Justice League is coming next weekend. Coming 2 America, the sequel to Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall’s classic 1988 comedy was last week, so what’s going on this weekend?

Amazon Prime: Mar 12

Let’s find out.

FIRST LOOK: Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry (2021) – Apple TV+

We don’t typically do FIRST LOOK here for documentaries, in fact this might be the first ever. It’s a special case, though, because since theaters have reopened we’ve seen the trailer in theaters almost every time. Apple is actively promoting this film.

Am also not that familiar with the music of young artist, Billie Eilish and her brother. She’s been enormously popular and with her brother created the theme to James Bond #25 No Time To Die. I’ve heard that. Also listened to another song on YouTube.

Her music isn’t my genre of choice, but I can appreciate the talent and her story — at least what little of it I know. She started in the business at 13 and has at least one EP and full album and several singles. The documentary will fill in the blanks for those of us who haven’t followed this artist.

The coming-of-age story of the singer-songwriter and her rise to global superstardom. From award-winning filmmaker R.J. Cutler, the documentary offers a deeply intimate look at this extraordinary teenager’s journey, at just seventeen years old, navigating life on the road, on stage, and at home with her family, while writing, recording and releasing her debut album “WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?”

Everything You Need to Know About Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry Movie (2021)

Official trailer:

I must ask, at least in curiosity, what’s the deal with the green hair? We had a birthday party for our six-year-old grandson this past weekend and friends of the family came over. He has three young daughters and all of them had, insert dramatic music, green hair.

Has Billie Eilish started a trend for girls and green hair? It looks …. alien-like to me. Maybe it’s her style? In my day, Cyndi Lauper dressed wild and her hair was wacky. Maybe Eilish is today’s Lauper? I don’t know.

Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry is streaming on Apple TV+ on February 26, 2021.

WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND #9 of 2021 Movie and TV Streaming Picks – Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Apple TV+, Shudder

Theaters/HBO Max: Feb 26

Weekend #9 of 52 (2/25 – 2/28/2021) for 2021 Picks By Streaming Service

The final weekend of February 2021 is upon us. Streaming channels are showing no sign of slowing down releasing new movies and TV shows while the theater scene continues to be in a state of paralysis of new titles. It’s like one here, two there and just ghost town movie theaters. We were saddened this week to see a beautiful IMAX screening of a film that had three people in attendance at a 7pm showing of Nomadland, two of which were us. The theater probably seated close to 200 people. Theaters are doing great business in China and some other countries.

Have been saying all along that theaters need to get more new movies showing in them, but for whatever reason that’s not happening. Probably to blame is the severe lack of moviegoers attending them. As mentioned previously, this is a slow time anyway for theaters, the first quarter of the year. This year is a bit unique because the academy extended the award eligibility window into early 2021 (see: Oscars 2021 Still On As Planned As In-Person Event, Not Zoom or Virtual)

Should Apple Buy MGM and gain 4,000+ movies including Bond?

Here’s a wrinkle in the Bond saga we haven’t discussed yet: MGM possibly wanting to sell to another studio or streaming platform.

The buyer then would have access to thousands of movies, including the entire Bond library.

MGM would like to sell to another studio or streaming platform before the when pandemic ruins the film industry. Ulrich, sources talks, wanted to strike a settlement with the firm in the region of $8 billion. This is a high amount of money and while MGM controls a 4000 titles library which everything from “The Silence of Lambs” to “Rocky,” many intellectual titles that also has been heavily profited

Netflix Ready to Buy ‘James Bond: No Time to Die’ Movie

The article seems to be perpetuating the rumor that Netflix might actually pay $600 million to buy the rights to Bond, but believe that’s already been debunked (see: No Time To Buy – At $800 Million, Don’t Blame Any Streaming Company for Saying “No!”).

I can see why MGM wants to get out, but there have been relatively few signs that Apple is interested in being or buying a film studio. Sure, they had roots in Pixar at one point when Steve Jobs was still alive, but look where that ended up (Disney).

It would be a good play for Apple to beef up their empty cupboards, but the price tag is very high ($8 billion?!). Despite having plenty of money to make that type of purchase and already committing to $6 billion for new content (see: Apple TV+ is all “about original programming” says CEO Tim Cook), I’d sooner think Amazon would be a more logical buyer for MGM than Apple. Still, Apple certainly could buy MGM. Something tells me though that they don’t want to go full in on another type of business right now and leave studio production to studios (see: Apple is #1 most valuable publicly traded company, fighting antitrust complaints, and now AppleTV+ somewhat on American Airlines)

Netflix might like to buy MGM, but that also seems unlikely to me, again due to the price tag. Who else is in the mix, studio-wise to buy them? Forget about AT&T, WarnerMedia seems to be more seller than buyer lately.

It is worth discussion that a way Bond might skip a theatrical release is through a sale to a streaming platform. We want to see Bond in theaters and hope MGM stays the course, but that’s anything but guaranteed in the current environment.

AppleTV+ Streaming The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown – Gone From TV Holiday Forever?

Happy Halloween!

If you don’t own the DVD or digital version of It’s The The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown then you’ll have to get an Apple TV+ subscription to watch in 2020. It won’t be airing on a traditional TV network.

In a deal unexpectedly announced last week, AppleTV+ revealed that it has acquired the streaming rights to at least three of the classic Peanuts holiday specials, including Great Pumpkin. It’s still not entirely clear whether the streaming rights to these specials are exclusive to Apple indefinitely, but all signs point to that being the case.

It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown isn’t airing on broadcast TV. It’s on AppleTV+. – Vox

If you don’t have a subscription to AppleTV+, then they are offering a brief free trial from October 30 – Nov 1 so you can subscribe and check it out.

Live TV is dying, no doubt, but hopefully not the tradition of airing holiday specials for free to the masses. Pay streaming channels like AppleTV+ should continue to use these holiday specials as free teasers for their services vs. a reason to subscribe.

Miracle on 34th Street is a tradition in our home. We have the digital version, so won’t have to worry about which streaming channel will be showing it (Disney+, I believe).

Our advice? Buy the family classics either on physical disc (most safe) or digitally (less safe, but more convenient) so you can watch them every year without having to worry who has the streaming rights. But if you do want to search for movies or TV shows, we recommend using JustWatch.com as your “where to find a movie or TV show” search engine. Yes, it’s better than Google and way better than Amazon which seems to want to have you buy something when there are no results.

After Quibi Finally Available To Cast To TV They Are Officially Shutting Down – A $2 Billion Dollar FAIL

Quibi, the streaming dumpster fire now has several cast to TV official options

We promised to say something when Quibi started supporting cast to TV in place of their “mobile-first” launch priority, so for those who have (very patiently!) waited, the time is now.

Now Quibi has launched on select smart TVs including Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, and Android TV. This just leaves out Roku and other smart TVs for the moment. This move is the latest in the short-form streaming service’s effort to reach more viewers amid dwindling performance.

Quibi is Now Available on Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, and Android TV | Cord Cutters News

Unfortunately that’s the good news. The bad news for Quibi fans is they are “winding down the service” and selling whatever they can.

Whitman reiterated her prior assertions that the company had adequate capital to continue operating for several more months. Instead, she said, “we made the difficult decision to wind down the business, return cash to our shareholders, and say goodbye to our talented colleagues with grace.“ She added, “We continue to believe that there is an attractive market for premium, short-form content. Over the coming months we will be working hard to find buyers for these valuable assets who can leverage them to their full potential.”

Quibi To Shut Down, Ending $2B Streaming Experiment – Update

Quibi does have some content that is worthwhile, so somebody will be interested — when the price goes low enough. I would have picked Apple as the most likely suitor, but apparently others have passed as well (see: Apple, WarnerMedia and Facebook Reportedly Say No To Buying Quibi).

It might sound like we’re dancing on their grave, but the truth is they took a bunch of investor cash and squandered it with an idiotic launch strategy. You don’t launch a streaming movie and TV show app without, well, widespread TV support (see: Quibi is the Cats of streaming services). Duh.

Investors have to be pissed. Quibi has burned through something like a billion dollars for this launch and have only a couple million ~750,000 subscribers to show for it.

Six months since launch, three of those months were offered free as incentive to join and then many bailed when they had to actually pay for the service (see: Less than 10% of Quibi FREE 90 day trials converted to paid subscribers). Yeah, it’s been a horrifically bad launch for this streaming service.

We’re sorry most for the 200+ employees who are losing their jobs. A lot of people are losing jobs out there in 2020 and that is the true tragedy in this story.

And now let the official Quibi Fire Sale begin. Who will buy their content? I still think Apple should jump in, as they have the barest content cupboards, but something tells me they won’t want to nibble on any Quibi leftovers. Netflix? They might do like what they did with YouTube Red (Cobra Kai!!!) and cherry pick some licenses for second seasons. Amazon? Same thing. HBO Max? Peacock? Hulu? CBS, er Paramount+? Let’s hear what you think below.
