Only one new movie being released in theaters this week, courtesy of Fox Searchlight. We’re still catching up with movies released to theaters since Christmas, but we’re getting close to seeing them all.
The trailer for Nomadland starts with a bunch of accolades from screening on various film festivals.
Nomadland
I’ve watched the trailer a few times but still am not completely sure what this film is about. It seems to be one of those, “you just have to watch the movie to understand” trailers, I guess.
Accordingly, since I don’t care too much for the vagueness of the trailer, this gets pretty low on my anticipation to want to see it. Feel about this almost like Land, which released last week in theaters. Haven’t seen that one yet, either.

The last time movie theaters were allowed via government order to be open in Washington State near Seattle where we live was the week of 11/13/2020 and AMC theaters reopened Friday 2/4/2021.
This coming weekend three new movies are premiering in theaters: The Mauritanian, Land and Judas and the Black Messiah on both HBO Max and in theaters.
Movie #3 of 17 for the HBO Max and theater simultaneous release schedule following Wonder Woman: 1984 and The Little Things.
Black Panthers, racism, rising against oppression. Some would say these topics never get old, but purely from an excited about watching these type of movies perspective? For me, not so much. Will admit this looks among the better ones for this subject matter.
Not sure if we’ll watch this in theaters on HBO Max. Not sure it’s the type of movie, unlike Wonder Woman or Godzilla vs. Kong that simply demand to be seen on the big screen, but we’ll see what we do. Not many new movies coming out the next few weeks, so probably will see this in theaters.
Anticipation: 4/10
Land
Hmm, this is one of those trailers that has me not sure what to think. Could go either way, so going to put anticipation in the middle. Haven’t heard much about this film before now, so it is sort of coming out of nowhere.
Anticipation: 5/10
The Mauritanian
Most looking forward to watching this one. I guess the whole 9/11 topic feels like it hasn’t fully been explored to me from every conceivable angle. For awhile, Hollywood was leaving this alone. Being it’s the 20 year anniversary of the horrible event, am guessing we’ll see more movies this year featuring this as a backdrop.

For those regularly watching movies in theaters, at least under normal business operating conditions, the theater memberships can be a good deal. AMC Stubs A-List offers the ability to see three movies a week. Normally, there are 2-4 new movies released.
However, we aren’t in normal times. While we were in Vegas we paid full ticket price to see Promising Young Woman ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Despite the times we’re in, and the possibility that theaters might be forced to close a third time, I reactivated my subscription and reserved a ticket to Monster Hunter. A review is coming.
I know it’s on VOD, but was encouraged by previews back in November when all theaters were forced to close in our local area.
Weekend #6 box office receipts as of Sunday morning are showing that Super Bowl Sunday is adding potential pressure to sales results, er, projections.
Among our favorite casino groups in Las Vegas are Station Casinos. They have a wide variety of properties across Las Vegas and Henderson including Red Rock at the north, which has the only 4DX Regal Theater.
This last weekend we booked a trip to Vegas for next month. We haven’t been there since the pandemic took hold and movies were shut down in March 2020. We’re returning for a couple reasons, one of which is we are Station Boulder Pass members and annually we need to use the free money converted from points earned. It’s been almost a year and we have a bunch of free money down there to use or lose.
Another reason is we want to check out the scene down there. We love visiting the hustle and bustle of Vegas. And perhaps most importantly, we have vacation time to burn so got to go somewhere. Maybe it would be wisest to stay home, but we’ve largely been doing that for the last year, except for working, which we’ve done the entire time.
We booked a room at a Station Casinos property we haven’t stayed yet. They have Regal Cinema theaters at the Green Valley Ranch in Henderson, but as of this writing they’re closed.
Will Regal Cinemas be reopened in a month? Don’t know. Hopefully, they will. If they are, then we’ll get to see some movies where we’ll be staying. If not, we will likely rent a car and visit the only Station casino in the greater Las Vegas area that is open … assuming it stays open a month from now.
As of this writing, the only Station Casino with any open movie theaters is Sante Fe Casino, which offers Century Theaters.
Our on-site 16-screen movie theatre is the perfect place for everything from casual date nights to relaxing family afternoons. With 3D and XD theatres, plush lounge seating, and alcohol & refreshments, there’s a little something for every type of movie-goer at Santa Fe Station.
Curious, we checked out what movies are now playing. Immediately noticed five new movies we haven’t seen and was excited. Think I’m more excited about a movie theater being open than seeing the rest of Las Vegas.
Locally movie theaters are supposed to be allowed to reopen in Washington State on January 11, 2021. They’ve been closed since November. No idea if that will be delayed further or not.
Here’s an odd one that businesses usually try to avoid: demand without supply.
The opposite, supply without demand, is also undesirable.
The former is happening in the videogame sector due to extreme demand for the new Playstation 5 and Xbox consoles. Online scalping bots have added to the pain and scooped up available units only to resell at a profit.
There is no secondary legal scalping market for new movies. Supply isn’t really an issue — and yet kind of is, since the studios want to release these movies in theaters only, but with a limited number of theaters open it is creating areas where tickets can’t conveniently be bought. Where does this show up on the financial spreadsheet for studio revenue? Lost ticket sales due to unopened theaters, I guess, would be the data column.
A few times in 2020 new movies have been released in theaters open in some areas of the United States. The closest theater open near us is almost 250 miles away. Despite our love for the cinematic experience watching new movies that far away means we’ll have to wait. We need to see movies locally or if we’re on vacation within say a 50 mile radius to be practical.
Last week, Sony released the videogame movie Monster Hunter, this week on Christmas day, two new movies were released that are only available in theaters: Promising Young Woman and Tom Hanks in his first western called News of The World.
Since VOD isn’t an option — and even if it was — we’d probably only pay $20 to watch one of these three (I’d opt for Monster Hunter, but Kara probably would opt for Promising Young Woman), we’re not going to be watching and reviewing any of these until, at the earliest possibly, January 4, 2020 when theater reopen if these movies are still showing theatrically.
No reason to think they won’t be, but also no reason to believe our local government won’t push back the reopening date for movie theaters again, as they were supposed to be reopen on December 14, which would have allowed us to see all of these movies in theaters.
Demon Hunter is killing it in Japan and not screening in America yet. Bonus #4 movie!
There’s actually a fourth new movie in theaters we’d like to see that we did preview (see: FIRST LOOK: Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba) That anime film based on a popular series is only showing outside the United States and it’s doing really well financially. I’m sure someday it will be made available to watch in America, but no date has been announced as of this writing.
It’s good to have new movies waiting, but it seems a little silly that there are moviegoers who want to see movies and they are not conveniently available. In the past I’ve complained about LIMITED releases this way. They show up in a few theaters, either independent, arthouse, or large cities only. This might be a way for a movie to test audiences in various areas around the country, in a world where there are a bunch of different ways to screen new movies conveniently, it is an archaic distribution procedure.
Meanwhile, Wonder Woman 1984 and Soul are two other new movies that were meant to be released in theaters originally. Wonder Woman 1984 of course controversially was made day and date available also on HBO Max and Disney chose to release Soul directly to Disney+. We have watched and reviewed both of those movies.
Of the four movies mentioned above, can you see any at theaters nearby in your area? Do you have any interest in seeing any of them? Or are you waiting for these movies to come to VOD or streaming?
We are AMC Stubs A-List Members, paying roughly $22/month each and can see 3 new movies in any format at AMC every week. We’re also Regal Unlimited members, but that subscription is on hiatus until Regal theaters reopen. We’ll likely only keep one of the unlimited movie theater plans, but for now we’re only paying for the one that’s active.
This week Blumhouse is treating us to Vince Vaughn playing a woman trapped in a serial killer’s body. It’s a black comedy horror. We have tickets reserved for Thursday, but the official release date is Friday The 13th: 11/13/2020.
Yes, looking forward to seeing this one. It looks potentially a little silly, if I’m being honest, but we both think it might be fun to watch.

The week following Halloween greets us with another new movie from Focus Features. They seem to be one of few studios taking advantage of all this cinematic spotlight. Hopefully soon others will join instead of going exclusively to streaming.
Don’t test the depths of a grandparent’s love for a grandchild. That seems to be the major conflict in this film starring two experienced, respected actors.
I’m ready to see what Kevin Costner and Diane Lane are up to in this film.

Halloween weekend is upon us and the theaters will see a LIMITED release of one movie. Maybe there will be others we don’t know about dropping but we have tickets already reserved the the movie below, so confident at least one is coming out this weekend.
Kara isn’t looking as forward to this as me. Then again she’s rarely that excited about horror films. I like creature films. No idea how this creature will turn out — good, bad or something in between, but we do know his name: Larry. No, not the cable guy.

Only one new movie this weekend to see in theaters, unless others drop unexpectantly. Last week that happened with The Kid Detective having a limited release.

Haven’t read any of the comic books its based on, but the basic premise sounds entertaining. Right now any sort of virus or communicable disease is going to have a special interest — or maybe not. Maybe some (many?) will have fatigue for these type of stories because they remind too much of the ongoing pandemic.
I’m hopeful this will be one of the better movies we’ve seen since the theaters reopened. It has potential.

It’s up to a thieving character seeking redemption and romance played by Liam Neeson in Honest Thief to set our popcorn munching stage this weekend. 2 Hearts will debut to tug at the romantics heartstrings.
Also, there’s Robert De Niro and friends in The War With Grandpa and the music story Yellow Rose that premiered last weekend for those of us that didn’t have any theaters open nearby to enjoy.
Can’t believe we’re talking about *4* new movies to see in movie theaters. It almost feels like before the pandemic.
This trailer gives me a Taken vibe, especially when Liam Neeson tells the corrupt cop he’s coming for him. That calm “I’m going to F you up” is pure Neeson gold. No idea how good this will be, but it will be our first movie at an AMC theater in 2020 and our 36thnew movie watched in theaters this year overall.

Lots of guys without shirts in the trailer! Based on an inspirational true story. Hmm … not sure what to say about this trailer. It’s giving me a lifetime movie vibe which means Kara will like it, but not sure it’s my thing. I do like a good romance and have enjoyed some lifetime movies, so maybe this will be a pleasant surprise, but anticipation is low.

The War With Grandpa (premiere 10/9/19) [FIRST LOOK]
The more times I watch this trailer, the dumber I feel for looking somewhat forward to seeing this. I think it’s the great cast of actors involved (Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, etc). With the $3.6 million it made last weekend with all Regal Cinemas closed makes me think other moviegoers were hopeful this would be entertaining, too. Could also be that it was the only brand new wide release movie available last weekend. Doubtful it outsells Honest Thief this weekend, but good luck to it!

Yellow Rose (premier 10/9/2020)
Sure has won a lot of awards. Wait, here comes border enforcement to shatter the country music dream. This could be one of those that I don’t think I’ll enjoy but do. Anticipation is low, but that doesn’t say anything about whether or not it will be good.
