Disney+ Adds Offensive Content Warning to 18 Episodes of The Muppet Show

Recently, Disney+ added all five season of The Muppet Show. The last two seasons were not as easy to see anywhere, so this is a cool add. They’ve also added offensive content warnings to some of the episodes.

Variety reported the disclaimer has been added to a total of 18 episodes throughout the show’s five seasons, including those guest hosted by Jim Nabors, Joel Grey, Steve Martin, Peter Sellers, Cleo Laine, James Coco, Spike Milligan, Crystal Gayle, Kenny Rogers, Beverly Sills, Jonathan Winters, Alan Arkin, James Coburn, Joan Baez, Johnny Cash, Debbie Harry, Wally Boag and Marty Feldman. The disclaimer appears at the beginning of these episodes for 12 seconds.

Things like Johnny Cash playing near the confederate flag are what likely generated this disclaimer at the beginning of some episodes. What about the Swedish chef? He was one of my favorite characters, but does his characterization insult Swedish people?

Not sure it’s a very encouraging sign when we need to have disclaimers put on Jim Henson’s The Muppet Show, but suppose this is 2021, where seemingly everything that happened in the past requires condemnation or explanation.

      1. well 1) people are just choosing to become offended at anything and everything w/o thinking. 2) who is Disney to decide what is offensive? and 3)as I said, I have not seen anything and I am pretty common sense. What was insensitive about the Jim Neighbors episode? Was it because he was a hick? So Gomer Pyle, one of TV’s most beloved characters of all time is now offensive? Really? There was a warning too, before a Spider-man cartoon episode where samurai are the villains. Now, as far as I know, samurai were really warriors. I don’t know if that’s good or bad, doesn’t matter. They are real. What’s wrong with that? Or is it just because the characters were drawn and voiced with such accuracy. I guarantee you that any kid watching 1) isn’t paying attention to any warning, 2)forgets the warning 10 seconds later and 3)both doesn’t see anything wrong or understand.

      2. Not saying I agree with hypersensitivity in 2021, but let’s be honest here: it’s a 5 second viewer warning. No different than a parental guidance message. I’m OK with that.

They used to smoke in every movie and TV show. Good guys, bad guys, it was considered commonplace to smoke — all the time. Now only the bad guys smoke, that will be probably be seen as offensive to somebody 20 years from now. You mean they let people smoke for real in movies?!?! Times change.

I’m not going to tell people what they should or should not be offended by. I might complain, like you are, about some of it being absurd — but that’s my opinion. The problem is that when we do that, some people then say we’re part of the problem.

      3. I wondering as I see this silly warning again and again, do people want things both ways? Are they speaking out of both sides of their mouths? By that I mean, people want and ask for inclusion in everything. They want characters of all races everywhere. BUT – when they see those characters they get insulted. I’m seeing these shows, doesn’t matter anymore which one it is, but it’s not as though these characters of Samurais are being portrayed in a bad way, They aren’t being shown as stupid or anything, just being used. But for some reason that still isn’t acceptable. You can’t have it both ways. You can’t ask for inclusivity and then be upset when you don’t have it.
