The List of Talented Entertainment People Dying In 2020 Continues: Sean Connery RIP at 90

Too many people that have enriched our lives with entertainment are dying in 2020. Some years just seem worse than others, but the same could be said probably every year. This year, though, it just all seems worse.

Am still trying to wrap my head around the news that Eddie Van Halen passed away recently (see: ) and now seeing the original James Bond, Sean Connery has died too. Connery was getting up there, at age 90, but it’s yet another reminder that our time in this plane of existence is limited.

“The wit and charm he portrayed on screen could be measured in mega watts; he helped create the modern blockbuster. He will continue to influence actors and film-makers alike for years to come,” said Craig in a statement shared by the official 007 Twitter account. Actor Hugh Jackman tweeted: “I grew up idolizing #SeanConnery. A legend on screen, and off. Rest In Peace.”

Connery defined James Bond and am already on record saying that after Bond #25 with Daniel Craig, I hope they go retro on the character and go back to the 60s. If only they do it for a few movies, but just for the sake of paying homage to the characterization provided by Connery. Yes, Bond was a womanizer and sexist pig and it would be fresh to put him up against a tough woman as a villain — and yet a feminist hero — that doesn’t take his crap. A female Goldfinger set in the 60s. Man, I’d like to see that Bond movie. No, I don’t want to see every movie go back to the 60s, only Ian Fleming’s original vision was in that time period and it’s not hard to argue that Bond is a fish out of water in any other time period.

Connery didn’t just do Bond, though. He was Indiana Jones’ dad! He was also in one of the better Michael Bay action movies, The Rock. Connery’s filmography is well worth revisiting, in fact, I put on one of the seven James Bond movies Connery was in (six pictured above, missing is the non-EON picture, Never Say Never in 1983)

Connery joins other entertainment icons who died in 2020 like Kirk Douglas, Lakers basketball sensation Kobe Bryant and his young daughter in a helicopter accident, the gambler Kenny Rogers, Neil Peart Rush’s legendary drummer, the guitar virtuoso Eddie Van Halen mentioned earlier in this piece. As far as up and comers go, let’s not forget Chadwick Boseman who passed away far too young. Am just scratching the surface of famous people who have died, but those folks come immediately to mind, and it’s never a good thing when death is on your mind.

Sounds like Connery died of natural causes, so thankfully we don’t have to talk about the virus in this post. Rest in Peace, Sean Connery. Thank you for your work.
