At the movie theater this weekend there are two new movie choices: The New Mutants or The Personal History of David Copperfield. The latter sort of came out of nowhere and is a LIMITED release.
Regal Cinemas are showing it, which means we’ll be watching at some point this weekend, maybe later tonight.
The Dickens adaptation features Patel as Copperfield, surrounded by a stacked cast that includes Tilda Swinton, Hugh Laurie, Ben Whishaw, Gwendoline Christie, Benedict Wong, and Peter Capaldi (as a pitch-perfect Mr. Micawber, the role he seems born to play). It retains a plentiful sense of the ludicrous in its exploration of class and social norms, though the film is affectionate in the end.
What to watch: Bill and Ted, David Copperfield, and 4 other offbeat movie adaptations of literary classics – Vox
Been a long time since I’ve read any Dickens, but this is loosely based on the classic story. Are you looking forward to seeing this film? Waiting for it to hit the streaming channels?
The Personal History of David Copperfield opens wide in theaters August 28, 2020.
