FIRST LOOK: Impractical Jokers: The Movie

Impractical Jokers: The Movie is from TruTV and playing in theaters since February 21, 2020

This is a first FIRST LOOK profiling a movie that’s already screening in the theaters. I noticed this one playing locally at the Regal Cinemas and mentioned it as a “bonus” in the opening 2-28-2020 post (even though it actually opened a week before), but my interest continues to grow in this movie that is playing almost wide now (2,000+ screens is considered a wide release).

Also, I’m curious how it just dropped in and opened without coverage from anywhere that I currently follow? Box Office Mojo and Movie Insider don’t even show it as a movie playing unless you click deep or search for it. Puzzling when you consider the box office sales (keep reading).

It didn’t show up in the 2020 coming soon lists either. This means my main sources are at least somewhat flawed. A movie that just drops in, creates a buzz and then expands to over 1,500 theaters shouldn’t be missing on my radar. I do see it on Movie Insider’s February 2020 list, but it doesn’t even have the box art

And yet it did.

So, skipping the meta moment, let’s look what this movie is doing and what it’s about.

Impractical Jokers: The Movie expanded to 1,820 theaters this weekend after earning $2.607 million in 357 theaters last weekend. Directed by Chris Henchy and based on the truTV television series Impractical Jokers, the film stars Brian Quinn, James Murray, Sal Vulcano and Joe Gatto, also known as The Tenderloins. The show concerns our stars conducting embarrassing hidden-camera pranks or dares. It has apparently run for eight seasons and 231 episodes (and is based on a UK show of the same name/concept which ran for three seasons and 21 episodes). Distributed by Warner Media, the film earned $890,000 (-7%) on Friday for a likely $2.6 million (-1%) second-weekend gross, bringing the $3 million flick’s ten-day cume to $5.692 million

Am going to see it later today, if I can coax Kara to go. She likes popcorn and those large reclining seats, but she only has bought into watching most wide release movies coming out, not all of them. For our vacation in Las Vegas next week, I’m springing a couple surprises on her that she might not be that interested in. Am not sure this movie will interest her at all either. It seems a bit like Jackass meets America’s Funniest Videos.

Then again, check out the trailer:

These four guys go by The Tenderloins and have been pranking each other on this TV show for 200+ episodes on TruTV. Here the four of them are talking about what they do on Kimmel:

Here is an example from an actual TruTV episode where The Tenderloins are pitching some horrifically bad ideas to a focus group.

This looks like it might be laugh out loud funny in parts. Will admit I laughed at the pure stupidity and the “real” audience reactions. Were they in on this somehow? That’s what I started to ask myself the more into the video I delved. Never have seen this show before, but it made me laugh, so props for that. Can this work as a full movie? Will find out.

Have you seen Impractical Jokers: The Movie? Do you want to?
