Opening 12-19-2019 in Theaters: Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker, Cats

Wednesday and that special day of the week for new wide releases for the theater. Only two this week, three if you count Bombshell, which technically opened last week.

Would like to say how excited I am that the final Star Wars, the 9-part epic ending is here, but am less excited about this week than last week’s releases. Especially after rewatching and reviewing Star Wars: The Last Jedi⭐️½ yesterday. Over the past month I rewatched all eight of the films. I’ve liked a lot of what J.J Abrams has done, so maybe he’ll turn me around with this final movie. The bar is kinda low for him after the last film to at least make an improvement. Too bad because I thought Star Wars The Force Awakens ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (also directed by J.J Abrams, co-written with Lawrence Kasdan who penned part 5 and 6) was the best film since Return of the Jedi ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Disney wants us to be all excited for this movie. I’m interested, have to be, based on my 40+ year history with the franchise, but haven’t seen a ground breaking Star Wars movie since the 80s.

Trying to remain optimistic that J.J Abrams finds a way to meaningfully sew up the Disney Star Wars trilogy. If only Carrie Fisher were alive and Rian Johnson and company hadn’t done Luke Skywalker the way they did, I’d be 10/10 in anticipation for this film. Luke will always be a hero in my book, so there is a bit of sacrilege with how Disney Star Wars has treated his character. I’m not invested in pretty much any of the new characters like I should be by the final movie in the trilogy.

Lando Calrissian coming back sort of makes me more interested.

I’m not totally against Disney Star Wars (am totally digging The Mandalorian so far!), but have concerns about if this movie is going to do the original trilogy and even the George Lucas prequels any justice or just piss all over more of their ashes.

We’ll see. No, I didn’t preorder tickets.

Anticipation: 7/10

Am not a huge fan of most musicals. There are exceptions, one being perhaps my most favorite musical of all time, The Wizard of Oz. My sense is that Cats will not be that type of story and there will be not be an amazing Judy Garland like singing, but am keeping an open mind. Anticipation-wise? Am lukewarm on looking forward to watching.

Anticipation: 4/10

ANTICIPATION for Week of 12/19/19 MOVIES

How much on scale of 1-10 anticipating the 12-19-2019 movies? Those marked with asterisk are not available in our area this week, so will carryover in future weeks until available to watch in our area.

  1. *Uncut Gems – 9/10
  2. *Bombshell – 8/10
  3. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker – 7/10
  4. Cats – 4 / 10

Are there screenings in our area to see these movies?

Uncut Gems is not available until 12/24 and Bombshell profiled as opening (very limited, like 6 screens in only New York and Los Angeles), the other two are confirmed wide screenings available in our area and the plan is to watch, review and rate all.
